What will we learn in Secondary 1?
Students will focus on expanding relationship to include exponential functions, focus on developing geometric reasoning, and a deepening understanding of statistics. Secondary 1 will focus on connecting different disciplines together in order to deepen understanding of concepts.
A brief overview of Secondary 1:
"Students in Secondary Mathematics I will deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomenon, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Students will use properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge. Algebraic and geometric ideas are tied together. Students will experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations."
Also, students will be focused on developing the habits needed to be successful mathematicians. The Common Core refers to these habit as Mathematical Practices. The practices are essential to students focus on the essential skills needed to be successful at any area of mathematics. The practices are as follows:
Practice Standard #1 will be a main focus for this class. Preserving through problems is a characteristic every great mathematician possesses. Mathematics has the ability to make even the most skilled among us feel incredibly challenged. Students will need to develop and possess perseverance in order to achieve success in this and future math classes.

- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
